AirFiber Inc., San Diego (Mid-Late 1990’s)

I used to work at Linkabit in Sorrento Valley back before it was Titan Linkabit and before they founded Qualcomm, built stadiums and all manner of philanthropy, and became a household name. I got to work directly with Jacobs and Viterbi from time to time on projects. Work there resulted in a few lasting friendships. One was Jim Dunn who later left Qualcomm to start 3Com - Primary Access and then later founded AirFiber before retiring into a duck blind. When the neural network opportunities were slow I was often able to find some contract work with these companies. I did some odds and ends at Airfiber, one of which was this OC 48 board working with Jim Troxel who provided details, He was another Linkabit Alum. Linkabit is the direct ancestor of quite a few San Diego tech startups that have themselves seen noteworthy success. This was my first exposure to optical communications which came back around for me when used at UCSD on ‘HiAER-Spike.’
